A recent survey by Agero estimates that roughly 55% of all drivers in the United States experienced at least one roadside event in the last 12 months – which accounts for nearly 130 million drivers every year.
And some experts would say that’s being generous – it could be even more than that!
The most common roadside events include flat tires (26%), jumpstarts (24%), issues with the key fob (13%), getting locked out of the car (11%), fuel deliveries (11%), and mechanical breakdowns (10%).
If you’ve ever been stranded on the side of the road, then you know how frustrating these types of events can be – especially since they always seem to happen at the wrong place and at the worst time possible.
But what if we told you roadside events didn’t have to ruin your day – or your mood?
What if we told you there was a way to always have a backup plan? And not one of those backup plans that ends up disappointing you when you need it most, but a backup plan that’s constantly on standby.
It might sound too good to be true, but don’t worry – it’s not, and that’s what roadside assistance coverage is for!
Roadside assistance is something every driver should have handy. It’s one of those things you hope you’ll never need, but you definitely don’t want to get caught without it – especially if you’re having a bad day.
But hold up – what is roadside assistance?
And what does roadside assistance cover?
Roadside assistance, also known as breakdown coverage or emergency road service (ERS), is a plan with emergency services that helps drivers find, schedule, and pay for assistance when stranded on the side of the road.
You can think of it as a lifeline for drivers. When they need something fixed or replaced but don’t have the means (funds, knowledge, etc.) to fix or replace it themselves, roadside assistance has you covered.
Every plan is different, but here are six of the most common issues covered by emergency roadside assistance.
If your vehicle breaks down and it can’t be fixed on-site, then you’re going to need a towing company to tow your vehicle to the nearest mechanic – or back to your house, if you plan on fixing the issue yourself.
Either way, your emergency roadside service will cover all or some of the cost of the tow truck company.
Most insurance plans will only cover towing services up to a certain mile – and they’ll usually only tow the vehicle to the nearest mechanic. If you’d like it towed somewhere else, you’ll have to cover the extra cost.
There’s nothing more embarrassing than locking your keys in your car or getting locked out of your car for whatever reason. It’s not only a major inconvenience, but it’ll make you feel helpless and out of luck.
But don’t worry – roadside assistance programs almost always covers the cost of a locksmith.
All you need to do is call the phone number listed on your roadside assistance program and they’ll send a locksmith to your location as soon as possible. Most people won’t have to wait more than 30 minutes.
If you’re stranded on the side of the road because you ran out of fuel, have a bad tire, or have a battery that won’t start, then roadside assistance services will deliver fuel, a new tire, or a new battery to your location.
But it’s important to understand that it won’t cover the cost of the actual fuel, tire, or battery.
Most roadside assistance plans will only cover the cost of the fuel delivery, but drivers will need to cover the cost of the items separately. For example, a new battery usually costs anywhere between $45 and $400.
Let’s say you have a flat tire and you have a spare tire in your trunk, but you have no idea how to change a tire. First off, don’t panic – new research suggests that 20% of drivers don’t know how to change a tire.
If you’re one of those people, your roadside assistance plan likely covers the cost of installing a spare tire.
Once you call your service provider, they’ll send a technician to your location immediately and it’ll only take them about 20 minutes to get your new spare tire installed. At that point, you’ll be off to the races!
Just because your battery won’t start doesn’t mean you need a new battery. If all you need is a jumpstart – and no one else is around to give you a jump – then your roadside assistance plan will cover that cost.
The goal is to get you back on the road as soon as possible – and that’ll only take about 30 minutes.
To be clear, roadside assistance won’t cover the cost of a new battery, but it usually covers the cost of delivering a new battery or jumpstarting your existing battery. Either way, it’s worth having coverage.
If your car is disabled and needs minor work done by a mechanic in order to get it running again, then emergency road service coverage will usually pay for the cost of mechanical labor – but only up to a certain point.
For most plans, that means covering the first hour (if not less) of on-site labor.
If the mechanic can’t fix the issue in under an hour, you’ll have two options – cover the extra cost and let the mechanic finish or have the vehicle towed to the nearest mechanic (which your plan would cover).
Are you stranded on the side of the road? Do you need fuel, a new tire, or a new battery delivered to your location? Does your vehicle need to be towed to a mechanic? Are you in a rush to get back on the road?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of those questions above, then you’ve come to the right place.
